Benoni lies on the East Rand of Gauteng, part of the Ekurhuleni metropolitan area east of Johannesburg. It grew up in the late nineteenth century on the gold-bearing reef of the Witwatersrand, and mining shaped its early layout. Today it is a largely residential town, with a mix of older suburbs, newer developments and remnants of its industrial past.
It is often called the city of lakes. Numerous natural pans and man-made dams are scattered across the area, and on a map they appear as open irregular shapes interrupting the streets. Several of them were connected with mining activity, while others are natural features of the Highveld. O. R. Tambo International Airport lies close by to the north.
A Benoni map poster brings out this unusual pattern. Suburban streets wrap around lakes and pans, rail lines and main roads cross the area in long straight lines, and patches of open land hint at former mining sites. The actress Charlize Theron was born in Benoni, and for many locals the town's lakes are its most personal landmarks.

Mining legacy
Open ground and straight corridors mark where the gold industry once operated, contributing to a looser, more varied street pattern than a typical suburb.
East Rand setting
Benoni forms part of a continuous urban band along the reef, with main roads and rail lines tying it to neighbouring towns across Ekurhuleni.
