Bregenz is the capital of Vorarlberg, Austria's westernmost state, on the eastern shore of Lake Constance. From above, the town fills a narrow strip between the water and the steep forested slopes of the Pfänder mountain. The long, curving shoreline promenade forms one edge of the map, and the mountain rises on the other.
The old upper town, the Oberstadt, sits on a hill above the modern centre, its compact streets clustered around the Martinsturm tower. Bregenz is best known for its summer festival, the Bregenzer Festspiele, with operas staged on a floating stage set in the lake.
