Buguda sits in the Ganjam district of southern Odisha, inland from the Bay of Bengal coast. From above it is a small, dense town. Irregular lanes pack close together near the centre and loosen as they reach the farmland around it. Roads leave the town in several directions toward nearby villages, so the street pattern looks like a knot tied in the middle of open fields.
The town is best known for the Biranchi Narayan temple, a sun temple whose painted interior murals draw visitors interested in the region's devotional art.
