Bulle is the main town of the Gruyère district in the canton of Fribourg. It sits on an open plain at the foot of the pre-Alps. On a map, the historic centre forms a compact, elongated core around its main street and castle. Newer neighbourhoods, industrial zones and roads have spread out around it in every direction as the town has grown steadily in recent decades.
The landscape around Bulle is what gives it its setting. To the south rise the peaks of the Gruyère region, including the Moléson. To the north-east lies the Lac de la Gruyère, a long reservoir on the Sarine. Bulle is also the home of the Musée gruérien, which documents the culture and traditions of the region, famous for its cheese and its alpine farming.
A Bulle map poster shows a Swiss market town in a period of growth. The dense old core is still clearly visible at the centre. Around it, a looser ring of housing and business areas has formed, crossed by roads leading into the valleys and toward the motorway. Beyond them, the streets give way to fields and the first slopes of the mountains.

Expanding outskirts
New neighbourhoods and business areas surround the centre in a broader, looser pattern. They show how quickly the town has grown.
Toward the pre-Alps
To the south, streets thin out into farmland and rising ground. On the map, you can see where the town meets the mountains.
