Charlestown lies on a small peninsula north of downtown Boston, between the mouths of the Charles and Mystic rivers. On the map, it is a compact, tightly built area. Narrow streets of rowhouses climb Breed's Hill and wind around it, and the obelisk of the Bunker Hill Monument stands at the top.
Along the southeastern waterfront is the former Charlestown Navy Yard, with long piers and dry docks extending into the harbour. USS Constitution, the oldest commissioned warship still afloat, is berthed here. The Freedom Trail continues across the Charlestown Bridge to reach both sites, linking the neighbourhood to the North End.
