Cheongju-si is the capital of North Chungcheong Province, in the centre of South Korea. The city sits in a broad basin, and the Musimcheon stream runs through it from south to north, dividing the older eastern districts from newer areas to the west. Low mountains surround the basin on several sides.
Cheongju is known for Jikji, a Buddhist text printed here in 1377 at Heungdeoksa Temple, and recognised as the oldest surviving book printed with movable metal type. On the eastern hills above the city stand the stone walls of Sangdang Sanseong, a mountain fortress that encloses a large wooded area.
