Kherlen meanders
The Kherlen River loops and splits beside the city's southern edge. Its winding channels and oxbows contrast sharply with the straight streets to the north.

Choibalsan Map Poster & Print
Choibalsan is the capital of Dornod, Mongolia's easternmost province, and one of the country's larger cities. It lies on the north bank of the Kherlen River as it winds east across the steppe towards China. On a map the city looks like a long band of planned streets. The river's loops lie to the south, and on every side the land is almost empty.
The city is named after Khorloogiin Choibalsan, who led Mongolia for much of the mid-twentieth century. Its layout still shows the influence of Soviet planning: wide straight avenues, large residential blocks and industrial areas laid out in rectangles. At the edges this pattern gives way to ger districts. Their fenced plots form a looser, finer grid.
A Choibalsan map poster captures that meeting of a planned city and open plain. The Kherlen curls through the lower half of the frame, the orderly blocks sit above it, and the drawing thins out quickly into steppe. It is a spare and quite graphic image of a place few people ever see from above.

Planned central blocks
Wide avenues and large rectangular blocks mark the Soviet-influenced core. It is the most geometric part of the map, laid out in a clear grid.
Ger district fringe
On the outskirts, rows of small fenced plots form a looser pattern, and then the lines stop where the open steppe begins.
