Chokwé Map Poster & Print
Chokwé lies on the south bank of the Limpopo River in Gaza Province, southern Mozambique. From above the town is surrounded by one of the most distinctive landscapes in the country: long, regular fields and irrigation canals that stretch across the floodplain in every direction.
The town is the centre of the Chokwé irrigation scheme, the largest in Mozambique, built to farm the fertile soil of the Limpopo valley. In 2000 the town was badly flooded when the Limpopo overflowed, an event that remains an important part of local memory.
A Chokwé map poster shows the compact town grid and the vast pattern of canals around it, with the curving river and its floodplain providing the natural contrast to the straight lines of the fields.

The Limpopo
The river winds past the town through a wide floodplain, and its curves form the only irregular line in a very ordered landscape.
Compact town grid
The town centre is laid out in regular blocks, a small dense area in the middle of the wider farmland pattern.
