Ciudad Choluteca Map Poster & Print
Ciudad Choluteca sits in the hot coastal plain of southern Honduras, a short distance inland from the Gulf of Fonseca. From above, the town reads as a tidy colonial grid of short blocks around a central square and cathedral. At its edges the grid loosens into newer neighbourhoods, fields and scattered roads. The Choluteca River runs along the town, its broad sandy bed much wider than the water it usually carries.
The river is also behind the town's best-known image. When Hurricane Mitch struck in 1998, floodwater cut a new channel for the Choluteca. The new bridge over the river survived intact, but its approaches were washed away and the water now flowed beside it. A sound bridge standing over dry ground became a widely shared picture of how quickly a landscape can move.
A Ciudad Choluteca map poster shows how a regular town plan sits next to a restless river. The straight streets of the centre, the sweep of the main highway and the pale, braided width of the riverbed give the composition clear contrasts. It works equally well in the crisp Classic style and in the warmer tones of Sand.

Choluteca River bed
A wide, shifting river corridor runs past the town. On paper its broad banks and sandbars read as a soft band against the sharper lines of the streets.
Pan-American Highway
The regional highway carries traffic toward the neighbouring countries on the Gulf of Fonseca. It draws a long, confident line through the otherwise modest road network of the surrounding plain.
