Clermont-Ferrand sits at the edge of the Limagne plain in central France, with the volcanic range of the Chaîne des Puys rising immediately to the west. The old town of Clermont occupies a low volcanic butte, and from above its streets form a rough oval around the high point where the cathedral stands. The city spreads outward across the plain in wider blocks and boulevards.
The Gothic cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption is built from dark volcanic stone, giving the skyline its distinctive colour. Clermont-Ferrand is also the home of Michelin, founded here in 1889, whose factories and grounds form large blocks in the northern districts. In 2018 the Chaîne des Puys and the Limagne fault were inscribed together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
