Dutse has been the capital of Jigawa State in northern Nigeria since the state was created in 1991. From above, the city combines an older settlement with a planned government district of wide roads, large plots and administrative buildings. The name Dutse means rock in Hausa, and the city is known for the granite hills and boulders that rise around it.
