Fairmont lies in north-central West Virginia, where the Tygart Valley River and the West Fork River meet to form the Monongahela. That confluence defines the city's map. Downtown sits on high ground above the river, with a dense grid of streets that gradually breaks into winding residential roads as the land rises and falls.
