Fontenay-le-Comte lies in the south of the Vendée department, on the river that gives the department its name. It was once the capital of Bas-Poitou and flourished during the Renaissance, and its old quarter still has a dense, irregular layout of narrow streets on the slopes above the river.
On a map the Vendée river winds through the centre, with bridges tying the two banks together. The historic streets gather around the church and the older squares, while later neighbourhoods spread out along the main roads. To the south lies the flat country of the Marais Poitevin, and to the north the land rises toward the Mervent forest.
