The Han widens as it nears the sea and forms the city's northern border. From the map, its broad channel reads as a strong, open edge.

Gimpo-si Map Poster & Print
Gimpo-si occupies a peninsula in Gyeonggi-do, bordered by the Han River to the north and east and by tidal channels to the west. Across the estuary lies North Korea, and on clear days its hills can be seen from observation points along the northern shore. That wide, protected river edge gives the map one of its most striking outlines.
Inside the city, two very different patterns sit side by side. Planned new towns, especially along the Han, appear as dense clusters of apartment blocks with wide roads and neat parks. Around them, the older landscape of rice paddies, villages and small hills survives in a patchwork of irregular plots. The Gimpo Goldline light rail runs through the middle.
The international airport that shares the city's name lies at its southeastern edge, mostly within Seoul. A Gimpo-si map poster puts all of this in one frame: the estuary, the new towns and the open fields between them.

New town grids
Large planned districts show up as dense, orderly blocks of streets and green spaces, clearly different from the older rural areas.
Rice field patchwork
Between the urban centres, paddy fields and small villages keep a fine, irregular pattern that softens the composition.
