The dock basins
A network of rectangular docks and locks stretches out beside the river. Their geometric shapes make the port the most distinctive feature of the map.

Goole is in the East Riding of Yorkshire, on flat land where the River Ouse meets the Dutch River, a channel cut to carry the River Don. The modern town was created in the 1820s by the Aire and Calder Navigation Company. The company built a canal and docks here to link the industrial West Riding with the Humber and the sea.
That planned origin still shows on the map. There is a regular core of streets next to a large system of rectangular docks, basins and locks, all set out with engineering precision. Goole is often described as England's most inland port, although ships reach it from the North Sea by way of the Humber estuary.
A Goole map poster shows an industrial town built around water. The docks form the most striking part of the map, a cluster of straight-edged basins next to the curve of the river. Two tall water towers, known locally as the Salt and Pepper Pots, have long been part of Goole's skyline.

River meeting point
The broad River Ouse and the straight, man-made Dutch River meet at Goole. One is winding and one is ruled straight, and they contrast clearly in monochrome.
A planned town centre
Streets laid out by the canal company in the nineteenth century form a tidy grid near the docks. The town's deliberate beginnings are still visible.
