Puythouck lake
A broad body of water ringed by paths and woodland. It appears as a quiet, organic shape against the more rigid lines of the housing districts around it.

Grande-Synthe Map Poster & Print
Grande-Synthe lies just west of Dunkirk, on the flat maritime plain of French Flanders. For centuries it was a small farming commune. Its population rose sharply in the 1960s and 1970s, when steelmaking and the growth of the port brought in thousands of workers. The street plan still reflects that period, with broad roads, large housing blocks and generous open land between districts.
From above, the town reads as a patchwork of separate pieces, not one continuous grid. Residential quarters curl around cul-de-sacs and loop roads, and major routes cut straight lines toward the coast. To the north, industrial zones and docks form large geometric shapes. In a Grande-Synthe map poster, the contrast between domestic curves and heavy industrial blocks becomes the main visual story.
Grande-Synthe is also known for its environmental policies, and in 2010 it was named France's capital of biodiversity. The Puythouck lake and the park around it form a large, irregular shape on the edge of town. Together with the canals and drainage lines typical of the Flemish lowlands, they soften the composition and balance the weight of the port.

Port and industry
Toward the coast, large industrial sites and dock basins read as bold rectangles and long straight edges, a graphic reminder of the steel and port economy that built the town.
Planned districts
Housing estates from the town's rapid growth have curving streets, loops and dead ends. The pattern is very different from the tight medieval cores of older Flemish towns.
