Great Falls Map Poster & Print
Great Falls sits on the Missouri River in central Montana, where the Sun River joins it from the west. From above, the city is a disciplined grid of numbered streets and avenues, running north and south of Central Avenue. The Missouri curves along the western and northern edges, and a trail system follows its banks.
The city takes its name from the series of waterfalls on the Missouri just downstream, which Lewis and Clark had to portage around in 1805. Today several of the falls are harnessed by dams, and Giant Springs, one of the largest freshwater springs in the country, flows into the river nearby. The painter Charles M. Russell lived and worked here.
A Great Falls map poster balances the city's firm grid with the river's broad, looping line. The contrast is striking in monochrome: straight, evenly spaced streets against a wide, sweeping waterway. It suits anyone who knows the prairie light and big skies of central Montana.

Numbered grid
Streets and avenues are numbered in a clear, regular grid centred on Central Avenue, making the city one of the most orderly shapes in Montana.
Falls and springs
Downstream, the river drops over the falls that named the city and that Lewis and Clark portaged around, near the outflow of Giant Springs.
