The harbour basin
The sheltered harbour gives the town its name and its shape. Piers and breakwaters form sharp geometric lines against the open water of the bay, anchoring one side of the map.

Hafnarfjörður Map Poster & Print
Hafnarfjörður sits on the southern shore of the capital area, a short drive from Reykjavík. From above, the town curves around a sheltered harbour. Its streets bend around old lava flows instead of following a grid, so the map looks irregular, with lanes that stop abruptly where the rock rises. The coastline, piers and breakwaters give the composition a strong edge on one side.
The lava is the town's defining feature. Housing areas step around it, and some pockets of rock were left as green space, so blank patches appear between the lines of streets. Hafnarfjörður is well known in Iceland for its folklore about hidden people living in the rocks, a story often told alongside walks through the older parts of town.
A Hafnarfjörður map poster shows that meeting of harbour and lava clearly. Dense lines near the waterfront thin out towards the newer districts inland, and the roads connecting the town to the rest of the capital region run across the page. Printed in black and white, the uneven ground reads as a pattern of broken curves rather than a plan drawn on flat land.

Streets around lava
Roads curve and fork around outcrops of old lava rather than cutting through them, which gives the residential streets a looser, more organic pattern than a typical planned suburb.
Open rocky ground
Stretches of lava left undeveloped appear as pale open areas between neighbourhoods, breaking up the street network and giving the poster room to breathe.
