Castle hill
South of town, roads wind up the isolated cone of Mount Hohenzollern to the castle. On the map, the looping access road stands out clearly against the surrounding woodland.

Hechingen climbs a slope above the Starzel valley at the edge of the Swabian Jura. Its old centre sits on higher ground, with streets curving down toward the river and newer districts spreading across the valley floor. From above, the town has a compact heart and looser edges, and wooded hills close in from the south.
The town was once the seat of the princes of Hohenzollern-Hechingen, and their buildings still shape the centre. Just to the south stands Mount Hohenzollern, crowned by Hohenzollern Castle. The castle is the ancestral seat of the dynasty that later ruled Prussia and the German Empire, and it is one of the most visited castles in Germany. Its silhouette is visible from much of the town.
A Hechingen map poster sets the old town, the river and the approach to the castle hill on one sheet. The winding roads that climb toward the summit contrast with the valley's straighter lines, and the forested slopes give the composition a soft outer frame. It works well framed in Paper or Classic.

Upper old town
The historic centre occupies raised ground, and its short, bending streets gather around the former residence quarter. The pattern is denser and more irregular than the districts below.
Starzel valley
The small river runs along the lower edge of town. Roads and a railway follow its course, giving the map a clear line through the valley.
