Canal system
Power canals on stepped levels run parallel to the river through the old mill district. They form long, clean lines that are unlike anything in most American cities.

Holyoke Map Poster & Print
Holyoke was built in the mid-nineteenth century as one of the first planned industrial cities in the United States. A dam across the Connecticut River fed a system of power canals laid out on several levels, and mills were lined up along them. On the map, the canals still run parallel to the river, with a regular street grid set neatly between them.
The city became known as the Paper City for the mills that once made much of America's fine writing paper. It is also where William G. Morgan invented volleyball in 1895, at the local YMCA. West of downtown, the land rises toward residential hills and then to Mount Tom, while the river curves broadly around the city's eastern edge.
A Holyoke map poster makes the industrial plan unusually clear. The long canals, the dam and the bend of the river form a strong frame, and the grid of mill blocks and brick neighbourhoods fills the space between. It is a map of a city built around water power, and it looks as deliberate as an engineering drawing.

Connecticut River bend
The river curves around the east side of the city, with the dam at the head of the canal system. It gives the map a bold, sweeping border.
Downtown grid
Between the canals and the hills, a regular street grid holds the mills, tenements and civic buildings of the planned city in tidy blocks.

අර්ථයක් ඇති සිතියමක්
Holyoke suits anyone who grew up in the Pioneer Valley, loves industrial history or plays volleyball and knows where the game began. The canal layout makes it one of the most graphic small-city maps in New England.
Add a title, subtitle and coordinates of your own, such as a street or a family year, and choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint suits the canals well. HD files are $9, and printed posters are also available.
