The main road to Nairobi and the railway lines leave the coast through this area, and neighbourhoods have grown along them in dense, informal patterns that fill the land between the routes and the water.
Tidal creeks reach inland here from the Indian Ocean, and their mangrove-fringed shores give the map an irregular, branching edge.
