Kaiserslautern lies in Rhineland-Palatinate, in a valley on the northern edge of the Palatinate Forest. On a map, the city is a dense urban area surrounded by forest on almost every side, with hills rising close to the centre. Main roads leave through valleys, and the Autobahn passes to the north.
The city is best known for football. 1. FC Kaiserslautern plays at the Fritz-Walter-Stadion on the Betzenberg, a hill overlooking the centre.
