Kashan lies in Isfahan Province on the edge of Iran's central desert, fed by water from the mountains to the southwest. Its historic core is a dense knot of narrow lanes, courtyard houses and covered passages, built close together for shade. On a map these streets form an intricate, almost cellular texture that differs from the straighter avenues of the modern city.
The old town is known for its Qajar-era merchant houses, such as the Tabatabaei and Borujerdi houses, with sunken courtyards and tall wind catchers.
