Keflavík is on the northern shore of the Reykjanes Peninsula in south-west Iceland, facing the bay of Faxaflói. Since 1994 it has been part of the municipality of Reykjanesbær, together with neighbouring Njarðvík. For most travellers it is their first view of Iceland, as the country's main international airport lies just outside the town.
On the map Keflavík is a compact town stretching along the coast, with the small harbour at the north end and grids of residential streets climbing a little inland. Around the town the land is open and bare, lava fields and moss, with the long runways of the airport, formerly a NATO base, to the west.
