Khomām lies on the humid coastal plain of Gilan Province, between the provincial capital Rasht and the port of Bandar-e Anzali. It is very flat country. From above, the town follows its main road in a long, narrow line, with side streets branching off briefly before they give way to the field boundaries that cover this part of northern Iran.
Rice farming shapes the surrounding land. On a detailed map the paddies show as a fine patchwork of small plots, cut through by irrigation channels and narrow farm tracks. Water is never far away here, since the wetlands and lagoon near Anzali lie a short distance to the north.
