Kiyose sits in the northwest of Tokyo Metropolis, on the border with Saitama. The Yanase River runs along its northern edge, and the city's streets form an irregular web of residential lanes instead of a formal grid. Unusually for a Tokyo suburb, the map still shows patches of farmland and woodland between the neighbourhoods, which gives it a softer, more open pattern.
The town's history is closely tied to medicine. In the twentieth century, Kiyose became known for its tuberculosis sanatoria, which were built here for the clean air and green surroundings.
