Branching lanes
Roads divide and rejoin across the high ground, forming an organic pattern with few straight lines. It looks more like a natural network than a planned street plan.

Kizhariyūr Map Poster & Print
Kizhariyūr lies in the Kozhikode district of north Kerala, inland from the Arabian Sea coast near Koyilandy. Like much of Malabar, it has no single dense core. Houses spread along lanes that follow the high ground, with coconut and areca groves between them and low paddy land in the hollows. The map is a fine, branching network rather than a block pattern.
This scattered layout is typical of rural Kerala, where the boundaries between villages and towns blur. On a monochrome print, the thin curving roads look almost like the veins of a leaf, joining at small junctions where shops and schools gather. Channels and ponds in the low areas add quiet interruptions, and each road takes the easiest line across the gently rolling ground.
A Kizhariyūr map poster suits people with roots in the area, including the many Malabar families who live and work abroad. It gives them a precise picture of the lanes that lead home. The design shows everyday geography that rarely appears in maps of India, where settlement and cultivated land are almost the same thing.

Paddy lowlands
Low, open fields between the inhabited ridges appear as calm empty areas. They mark where water collects during the monsoon and separate one cluster of homes from the next.
Near the coast
The Arabian Sea shore is a short distance west. On a wider framing, the coastline and the main coastal road make a straight border against the curving inland lanes.

For many people this map is a way of keeping a family home in view from far away. A clean print of Kizhariyūr's lanes can hang in Dubai, Bengaluru or London and still show the exact path to a particular gate.
