La Rochelle lies on the Atlantic coast of western France, facing the islands of Ré and Oléron. The old town's heart is the Vieux-Port, a small, nearly enclosed harbour guarded by medieval towers. From there a tight network of streets lined with arcades spreads inland, still bounded in places by the lines of old fortifications.
Around this core, the coast is shaped by harbours of different sizes. To the south, the Port des Minimes is one of the largest marinas on the European Atlantic coast. To the west, the commercial port of La Pallice, and beyond it the long bridge to the Île de Ré stretching across the water.
La Rochelle was a Protestant stronghold, and in 1627–28 it was besieged by Richelieu's forces for over a year. A La Rochelle map poster shows the city where it meets the ocean, with its harbours, towers and old walls.

Minimes marina
South of the centre, the long pontoons of the Port des Minimes form a dense comb of lines extending into the water.
