Lembang lies in the highlands of West Java, just north of Bandung, on the slopes that rise toward the Tangkuban Perahu volcano. The town and its surrounding district sit well above the city, and the map reflects the terrain: roads curve and switch back across the hillsides, and settlements follow ridges and valleys rather than forming a regular grid.
The cooler climate has long made Lembang a place for vegetable farms, flower nurseries and dairy cattle, as well as a weekend destination for people from Bandung and Jakarta. It is also home to the Bosscha Observatory, one of the oldest observatories in Indonesia, founded in the 1920s. The Lembang Fault, a well-studied geological feature, runs across the area.
