The fortified compounds appear as compact square shapes among the modern streets, small historic footprints that stand out clearly against the surrounding urban fabric.

Longgang Map Poster & Print
Longgang is a district in the northeast of Shenzhen, in Guangdong province. On a map it is a patchwork of dense urban centres separated by forested hills, reservoirs and major highways. Unlike Shenzhen's central districts along the coast, Longgang developed inland from a series of towns and villages, and its street patterns still show how those separate places grew together into one large district.
The district holds some of the region's best-known Hakka walled villages, large fortified compounds built by clans in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Longgang also hosted venues for the 2011 Summer Universiade, and the Dafen oil painting village, known for its many painting studios, lies within its borders. Today it combines high-rise housing, industry and technology parks.
A Longgang map poster shows modern Shenzhen away from the familiar skyline: clusters of streets set in valleys, highways cutting across hills and reservoirs lying in the folds of the land. The composition is varied and open, with as much green space as built-up area in places, a reminder of the landscape the city grew into.

Hills and reservoirs
Forested ridges and reservoirs separate the district's urban centres, creating large open areas that give the map room to breathe between the dense clusters.
Highway network
Expressways and main roads cross the district and connect it to central Shenzhen and Dongguan, drawn as sweeping curves through valleys and around the hills.
