Lop Map Poster & Print
Lop county lies in the Hotan prefecture of Xinjiang, on the southern edge of the Taklamakan Desert, with the Kunlun Mountains rising to the south. Like other settlements along this ancient route, it depends on water flowing down from the mountains, and its inhabited area is an oasis, a green island of fields and villages surrounded by sand and gravel.
From above, the contrast is stark. Inside the oasis, irrigation channels and roads lined with poplars divide the land into a tight grid of fields and orchards. Outside it there is almost nothing. The Hotan region has long been known for its jade, silk and carpets, crafts that grew out of these oasis communities on the southern Silk Road.
A Lop map poster makes that sharp boundary its subject. A dense lattice of roads and field edges fills part of the sheet and then gives way to open space. It is one of the most graphic contrasts a map can show, and it tells the story of life at the desert's edge without needing a single word.

Irrigation grid
Channels and tree-lined roads divide the oasis into small, regular plots, creating a fine lattice across the settled area.
Kunlun meltwater
Rivers descending from the Kunlun Mountains feed the oasis, and their courses shape where fields and villages can exist at all.
