Lower Earley lies on the southeastern edge of Reading, within the borough of Wokingham in Berkshire. It was built mainly in the 1970s and 1980s and is often described as one of the largest private housing developments in Europe at the time. From above, its origins are obvious: loops of distributor roads with curving closes, crescents and cul-de-sacs branching off them.
Green spaces run through the development, and Maiden Erlegh Lake with its nature reserve forms a calm, irregular patch of water and woodland in the middle of the housing. The M4 motorway runs along the southern side, a strong straight line against the soft curves of the estate, and the valley of the River Loddon lies to the east.
