Radiating trunk roads
Major roads leave the centre in several directions across the open plain. They give the map a clear star-like structure that holds the dense neighbourhoods together.

Maiduguri Map Poster & Print
Maiduguri is the capital of Borno State in north-eastern Nigeria and the largest city in the region. It took its modern form in the early twentieth century, when the colonial administration set up a new centre at Yerwa, and both names still describe parts of the same city. The terrain is almost perfectly flat, so the street network spreads outward with no hills or major rivers in the way.
On a Maiduguri map poster, main roads radiate from the centre towards the towns of the region, and dense residential quarters fill the spaces between them in fine, irregular textures. The seasonal Ngadda river traces a thin line through the urban area and is dry for much of the year. Larger blocks mark institutions such as the University of Maiduguri and the airport.
For centuries this part of the Lake Chad basin was the heartland of the Kanem-Bornu Empire, and the Shehu of Borno, the traditional ruler, keeps his palace in the city. Maiduguri remains a trading and educational hub for a wide area that reaches the borders with Niger, Chad and Cameroon. Its map reflects that role: wide, far-reaching and firmly rooted in the plain.

The Ngadda watercourse
A seasonal river winds through the city as a narrow, meandering line. It is one of the few natural features that interrupt the otherwise flat, continuous street pattern.
Dense old quarters
Near the centre, closely packed lanes form a fine, intricate texture. This contrasts with the larger, more regular blocks of newer districts and institutional grounds at the edges.

For people from Borno living elsewhere in Nigeria or abroad, a map of Maiduguri is a direct link to home, its streets, markets and neighbourhoods. The flat, radiating layout also makes a strong graphic composition.
