Mascara sits on a slope in north-western Algeria where the Beni Chougrane hills meet the open plain to the south. From above, the older part of the town is a dense patch of short, irregular streets on high ground. Newer districts spread outward in looser, more regular blocks, and main roads leave the centre toward Oran, Sidi Bel Abbès and the interior.
The town has a firm place in Algerian history. In 1832 Emir Abdelkader was proclaimed leader of the resistance to French rule on the plain outside Mascara, and for a time the town served as his capital. Later the surrounding hills and plain were known for vineyards and grain, and the countryside around the town is still mostly farmland.
A Mascara map poster shows the difference between the tight old quarter and the open land around it. The streets bunch together where the ground is highest and loosen as they run down the slope. Beyond the last blocks, roads and field tracks stretch out in thin straight lines across the plain, which gives the print a strong sense of place.

Several main roads leave the centre in different directions and link Mascara to Oran and to other towns of the western Tell.
