Nässjö Map Poster & Print
Nässjö lies on the South Swedish highlands in Jönköping County, a plateau of forest, lakes and scattered farms. In Sweden it is known as a railway town. It grew in the late nineteenth century around a junction where the Southern Main Line meets several other lines. The tracks still shape its map, converging on the station from different directions like spokes on a wheel.
Around the station the streets form a fairly regular grid, typical of Swedish towns planned in the railway era, with a central square and straight residential streets. Beyond it, the plan softens into villa districts and newer housing that wrap around small lakes and bands of woodland. Straight railway lines against irregular water give the town a distinctive outline.
A Nässjö map poster makes the railway the backbone of the image, which suits a place so closely tied to it. Many people have changed trains at the junction on journeys across Sweden. Many others worked on the railway or grew up hearing the trains. The monochrome drawing gives the rails, streets and lakes equal weight.

Lakes in town
Small lakes sit close to the centre and at the edges of town. They leave clean open shapes that break up the street pattern and soften the railway lines.
Railway-era grid
The central streets follow the regular plan of Swedish towns that grew around a station, with straight blocks laid out around a main square close to the tracks.
