To the north, the town ends at the Haard, a large wooded area where only thin forest paths cross the map, creating a quiet, open half of the image.

Oer-Erkenschwick Map Poster & Print
Oer-Erkenschwick lies on the northern edge of the Ruhr area, in the district of Recklinghausen. The town grew from two villages, Oer and Erkenschwick, and the map still shows it: two centres joined by twentieth-century districts. North of the town, the street network stops abruptly where the Haard begins, a large forested upland with a network of paths.
Like much of the Ruhr, the town was shaped by coal mining. Pit sites and miners' housing estates, with their regular rows of streets, defined its growth for decades. Since the mines closed, green corridors and leisure areas have taken over some of that space, while the Haard to the north is now known as a place to hike and cycle.
An Oer-Erkenschwick map poster shows the typical Ruhr contrast between built-up land and open landscape. In the south, the streets are dense and interconnected, and in the north the lines give way to forest paths. The two former village centres give the map two focal points rather than one, which makes the composition unusually balanced.

Two village cores
The old centres of Oer and Erkenschwick are still recognisable as separate clusters, linked by the residential districts that grew between them.
Miners' estates
The regular rows of streets in former colliery housing estates form small, orderly patterns that recall the town's mining past.
