Osinniki lies in Kuzbass, the coal-mining region of southern Siberia, a short distance from Novokuznetsk. The town follows the valley of the Kondoma River, and its map reflects that. There is no single compact centre. Instead, separate districts are strung out along the river and up side valleys, linked by roads and rail lines that wind through hilly, forested country.
The town grew with the coal industry in the twentieth century, and mining remains central to its identity. Its neighbourhoods often grew up around individual mines, which explains why it looks more like a chain of settlements than one continuous city. Between the built-up areas, woodland and slopes fill much of the space.
An Osinniki map poster shows this scattered, linear character well. The river curves through the frame, rail lines and roads trace the valley floors, and patches of dense streets appear where the terrain opens up. It is an honest portrait of an industrial Siberian town shaped by coal and topography.

Scattered districts
Residential areas sit apart from one another, many of them first built near individual mines. On paper they form separate islands of streets connected by long roads.
Rail through the valley
Railway lines follow the lowland and serve the mining industry. Their smooth curves contrast with the tighter lines of the residential streets.
