Padua is one of the most intricate cities in the Veneto to see from above. The Bacchiglione and its canals loop through and around the historic centre, and a long circuit of sixteenth-century Venetian walls, much of it still standing, gives the old city a clear boundary. Inside, narrow streets and arcaded lanes bend to follow the water rather than any grid.
The city's institutions leave their mark on the plan. The University of Padua, founded in 1222 and once a place where Galileo taught, is spread through the centre. The Basilica of Saint Anthony has its domed silhouette to the south, and the Orto Botanico from 1545, the oldest academic botanical garden still on its original site, sits beside it as a small walled circle.
A Padua map poster shows the city's defining shape just south of the basilica: Prato della Valle, a huge elliptical square ringed by a narrow canal and lined with statues. It is instantly recognisable in black and white, a clean oval set among the winding streets.

Venetian walls
Renaissance fortifications trace a long, angular ring around the historic centre, with bastions visible as sharp points along the outline.
River and canals
The Bacchiglione and its branches curve through the old city, splitting it into irregular sections and giving the map its flowing structure.
