Paulo Afonso sits on the São Francisco River in northern Bahia, near the borders with Alagoas and Pernambuco. The river here once dropped through a series of powerful falls into a narrow gorge, and the landscape remains dramatic: deep canyon walls, rocky outcrops and wide reservoirs held back by concrete dams.
The city grew up largely around the construction of the Paulo Afonso hydroelectric complex, operated by CHESF, which has been one of the main sources of electricity for Brazil's Northeast since the 1950s. On a map, the dams, spillways and reservoirs form strong geometric shapes against the river's natural curves.
