Pickering Map Poster
Pickering stretches along the north shore of Lake Ontario on Toronto's eastern edge, in Durham Region. The southern part of the city is a dense weave of suburban crescents and cul-de-sacs, cut east to west by Highway 401 and the lakeshore rail line. Further north the grid of concession roads takes over, and the map opens into fields, woodlots and scattered hamlets.
Its most distinctive coastal shape is Frenchman's Bay, a sheltered lagoon behind a narrow sandbar, lined with marinas and small parks. Nearby, the large Pickering Nuclear Generating Station fills a squared-off block of shoreline. To the west, the Rouge River valley and Rouge National Urban Park form a wide natural boundary with Toronto.
A Pickering map poster shows the contrast that defines the city: tightly packed residential streets near the lake, long straight rural roads to the north, and ravines winding between them. In black and white, the lakeshore becomes a clean, strong edge along the bottom of the frame, with everything else building up above it.

Rouge valley edge
The winding Rouge River and its wooded ravines trace the western boundary. They are part of Canada's first national urban park and show as an open, meandering gap between the cities.
Concession road grid
North of the suburbs, the nineteenth-century survey grid of straight concession roads crosses farmland and hamlets, giving the upper part of the map a spare, geometric rhythm.
