Rio Grande
The river bends along the city's edge, separating it from Eagle Pass and giving the map a strong natural line that no street pattern could produce.

Piedras Negras Map Poster & Print
Piedras Negras lies on the south bank of the Rio Grande, known in Mexico as the Río Bravo, directly across from Eagle Pass, Texas. On a map the river forms a bold, winding boundary along the city's northeastern edge, with a regular street grid spreading back from it across the flat plains of northern Coahuila.
International bridges cross the river here, carrying road and rail traffic between the two countries, and the city's economy is closely tied to cross-border trade and manufacturing. Piedras Negras is also widely credited as the birthplace of nachos, said to have been improvised in the 1940s by a restaurant maître d' named Ignacio Anaya.
A Piedras Negras map poster shows two cities facing one another across a single meandering line of water. The Mexican grid, the Texan streets opposite and the bridges between them make a composition as much about connection as about borders, and the name itself, black stones, recalls the coal found in the surrounding region.

Downtown grid
Close to the river, the historic centre follows a regular grid of blocks around its main plaza, expanding outward into newer neighbourhoods and industrial areas.
