Pinerolo lies south-west of Turin, where the Chisone valley opens out onto the Po plain. The map shows that meeting of landscapes clearly. To the west, the land rises into the foothills of the Alps, and the old town climbs a slope towards the church of San Maurizio. To the east, the newer city spreads across flat ground in broad avenues and regular blocks.
The town has a long military history. It was once a heavily fortified stronghold, and its fortress was used as a prison where the man known as the Man in the Iron Mask was held. Later Pinerolo became home to Italy's cavalry school, and the town kept a strong connection to horsemanship. In 2006 it hosted the curling competitions of the Turin Winter Olympics.
