Psara lies in the northeastern Aegean, a short distance west of Chios, with the smaller islet of Antipsara beyond it. The island is bare, hilly and rocky, with an irregular outline of coves and points. Almost all of its life is gathered in one place, a harbour village in the southwest whose tight streets face the sea.
Psara's fame is out of proportion to its size. Its merchant fleet played a major role in the Greek War of Independence, and in 1824 Ottoman forces attacked the island and largely destroyed it. Dionysios Solomos mourned the event in a short, well-known epigram, and the island's name still carries weight in Greece today.

West of Psara lies Antipsara, a smaller and largely empty islet. With both in the frame, the poster becomes a pairing of two shapes separated by a strait.

Beyond the village the shore is a sequence of coves and headlands, few of them reached by roads, which gives the outline a broken, hand-drawn quality.
