Quedlinburg lies at the northern edge of the Harz mountains, and its old town has survived with remarkably little change. Its layout is medieval. Narrow lanes curve and fork, market squares open unexpectedly, and small, irregular blocks pack closely together. Along with the collegiate church and castle, the town is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The castle hill rises at the southwestern edge of the old town and carries the Collegiate Church of St Servatius, where Henry the Fowler, the first German king of the Saxon line, is buried. Across the town stands the Münzenberg, another small hill covered in tiny houses. The River Bode flows along the eastern side.

Bode valley
The River Bode and its side channels run past the eastern side of town, adding soft curves to the tightly packed urban centre.
