Shalkar Map Poster & Print
Shalkar lies in the Atyrau Region of western Kazakhstan, on the vast lowland plain that stretches north of the Caspian Sea. The terrain is flat and dry. Settlements show on the map as small, self-contained clusters of streets in open steppe, linked by long roads and tracks that run for many kilometres with barely a turn.
Several places across Kazakhstan share the name Shalkar, a word associated with wide, open water, which says something about how much water counts in this landscape. The steppe around the settlement is used largely for grazing. As is typical in the region, the built-up area is laid out in straightforward rows of houses and yards, with wide streets.
A Shalkar map poster is minimal almost by nature. The settlement sits at the centre like a small printed mark, and the roads leading away from it draw long, clean lines through blank space. For anyone who knows the steppe, that emptiness is the point: it says more about the place than any amount of detail could.

Long steppe roads
Roads and tracks leave the settlement in nearly straight lines across the plain. For a long distance in every direction they are the only strong marks on the landscape.
Open plain
Flat, unbuilt land surrounds the settlement on every side. The wide areas of empty space give the poster its spare, graphic quality.
