Temirtau sits in the Karaganda Region of central Kazakhstan, on the open steppe northwest of Karaganda. The city runs along the shore of the Samarkand Reservoir on the Nura River. On a map its planned residential districts of wide avenues and large blocks sit beside an industrial zone almost as large as the city itself.
Temirtau, whose name means iron mountain in Kazakh, grew around its iron and steel works, one of the largest metallurgical plants in Central Asia. The city was built largely during the Soviet period. It is also where Nursultan Nazarbayev, Kazakhstan's first president, began his working life at the steel plant.
A Temirtau map poster makes the structure of a Soviet industrial town unusually clear. Straight boulevards and microdistrict blocks form an orderly grid, and rail sidings and plant roads fan out across the works. The irregular shoreline of the reservoir adds a soft, natural edge to an otherwise geometric plan.

Steel works
The metallurgical plant covers a large area next to the city, crossed by rail lines, access roads and long production buildings. It forms a distinctive industrial block.
Microdistricts
Residential areas follow the Soviet planning model, with large blocks separated by wide avenues. The result is a clear, regular pattern across the city.
