Mare Island
The long, low island across the strait holds the former naval shipyard. Its piers, dry docks and orderly streets still show as a separate grid on the western side of the map.

Vallejo Map Poster & Print
Vallejo sits at the north-east corner of San Pablo Bay, where the Napa River widens into the Mare Island Strait. On a map the city is defined by water on two sides: the strait and Mare Island to the west, and the Carquinez Strait to the south. Inland, older grid streets near downtown give way to curving post-war subdivisions that climb over low hills toward the east.
Mare Island was home to the first United States Navy base on the Pacific coast, established in 1854, and its shipyard built vessels for more than a century before closing in the 1990s. Vallejo also served briefly as California's state capital in the early 1850s. Today the Carquinez Bridge, carrying Interstate 80, links the city to the rest of the East Bay.
A Vallejo map poster brings out this waterfront geography: the long edge of the island, the narrow channel beside downtown, the bay shoreline and the bridge over the strait. Streets and water balance each other in black and white. The result is a map with a strong sense of place, anchored by the shoreline rather than by any single landmark.

Carquinez Strait
To the south, the narrow strait joins San Pablo Bay to Suisun Bay. The Carquinez Bridge carries Interstate 80 across it, a bold line reaching toward Crockett.
Downtown grid
Near the waterfront, downtown Vallejo follows a regular nineteenth-century grid. It gives way to winding residential streets as the city rises over the hills to the east.
