St. Peter's Square
Bernini's colonnades enclose an elliptical piazza with an obelisk at its centre, a form so precise that it reads on paper almost like a drafting exercise.

Vatican City is the smallest independent state in the world, covering roughly 44 hectares within the city of Rome. It became a sovereign state under the Lateran Treaty of 1929, and it is the seat of the Pope and of the central government of the Catholic Church. Almost every part of its territory is a church, a museum, a garden or an office.
Seen from above, the state is an irregular walled enclosure on the Vatican Hill. The ellipse of St. Peter's Square, framed by Bernini's curving colonnades, is the one shape nearly everyone recognises, and it leads directly into the vast cross of St. Peter's Basilica. Behind it, the Vatican Gardens fill much of the western half with winding paths and planted terraces.
Beyond the walls the map is pure Rome: Via della Conciliazione runs straight from the square toward the Tiber and Castel Sant'Angelo, and the dense blocks of Borgo and Prati press close on either side. A Vatican City map poster frames that contrast between a closed, self-contained enclave and the open city around it.

Vatican walls
Fortified walls trace most of the state's boundary, giving the territory a hard, irregular outline that separates it cleanly from the surrounding streets of Rome.
Via della Conciliazione
This broad, straight avenue, opened in the twentieth century, connects the square with the Tiber and forms the strongest axis on the map outside the walls.

People hang Vatican City after a pilgrimage, a first visit to Rome or a sacrament celebrated there, and also simply for the beauty of its geometry. The square, the basilica and the gardens make a composition that feels both ceremonial and intimate, even in a small format such as A3.
Personalise it with your own title and subtitle, the date of a visit or a baptism, and a coordinates line, then choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The $9 digital files include six print sizes as 300 DPI PNG and print-ready PDF.
