Villefontaine Map Poster & Print
Villefontaine is in the Isère department, south-east of Lyon, and is one of the communes of the L'Isle-d'Abeau new town, a planned urban area developed from the 1970s. Its layout shows that clearly. Instead of an old square with radiating streets, it has curving distributor roads, looping residential lanes and neighbourhoods separated by woods and green spaces.
The terrain is hilly, and the planners worked with it. Roads bend around the slopes, and housing groups sit on the higher ground. A lake with parkland around it forms a large open shape near the town, a popular place for walks and swimming. Motorways and the Lyon–Grenoble railway pass nearby, linking the town to the metropolis.
A Villefontaine map poster is a strong example of late twentieth-century French urban planning seen from above. Flowing roads, cul-de-sacs shaped like leaves on a stem, water and woodland make up a composition far more organic than most people would expect.

Lake and park
A lake surrounded by greenery forms a large, smooth shape on the map, a calm counterweight to the fine lines of the surrounding housing.
Wooded hills
Patches of forest and hilly ground divide the districts, leaving the town airy and distinctly green in its layout.
