Vinukonda lies in Andhra Pradesh, in the Palnadu region west of Guntur. The town's defining feature is the rocky hill beside it, crowned with the remains of an old fort. From above, streets cluster around the base of the hill, tighter in the old centre and looser toward the edges, before opening onto flat farmland.
The name is usually explained as the hill of hearing, from a local tradition that Rama heard news of Sita here. Today Vinukonda is a busy local centre for the surrounding villages, with markets, schools and main roads linking it to Guntur, Narasaraopet and beyond.
